Caldera de Gairia Natural Monument

Area: 240.9 hectares
Minimum height above sea level: 185 m
Municipalities: Antigua and Tuineje
Maximum height above sea level: 461 m

This, together with La Arena volcano, is where one of the last volcanic eruptions took place on the island, one of the peculiar characteristics of which has been to preserve remains of climatic vegetation in dry areas. On the western side of the crater, you can make out its broken profile, caused by continual open-cast mining. In spite of everything, this natural monument still maintains its current if not original attractiveness.
