North Route

From Corralejo, an important tourist area with magnificent beaches and a charming landscape and from where you can make out Lanzarote and Isla de Lobos, and going southwest along the island's inland road, you reach Lajares, famous for its embroidery. 7 kms. away is El Cotillo, a fishing village with a number of small beaches where you can find the Tostón fortress which used to be a lookout point against pirate attacks.

Going back along the same road to Lajares, and heading towards the centre, you reach La Oliva, which used to be the capital of the old Maxorata, and which has a valuable archaeological legacy which is on display in the museum at Betancuria. Part of its 18th century pictorial-architectural heritage is the church, with its square, local stone tower with its straight lines which give it a certain elegance, and where you can find the altarpiece by Juan de Miranda. You can also visit the La Cilla house with the Grain Museum, where the visitor can see the history of the traditional agricultural cycle, the different types of grain, traditional farming methods, and a collection of farming implements.

One of the most important monuments is the Coroneles House, built in the colonial style, which with the group of houses making up the residential complex, was where the colonel, soldiers, and servants lived. Locals called it the "House of the Marquess", and it is said to have "as many doors and windows as days in the year". It is also worth visiting the Canary Island Art Centre.

Going through Tindaya, you can see from the Tindaya Mountain road where important archaeological remains have been found, such as podoformos. Continuing along the main road, on the right you can see the Quemada Mountain, with its monument to Unamuno. From La Matilla and the Valle de Tetir, you come to Puerto del Rosario, the island's capital and commercial centre. Here you can visit the Casa de la Cultura and the Sala del Archivo Histórico where there are picture, photographic exhibitions, etc., and also visit the Unamuno Museum House, where Miguel de Unamuno stayed during his exile on the island.

Back towards Corralejo along the coastal road, you go through the Las Dunas de Corralejo Nature Reserve, with its unique landscape and impressive beauty.
